Is using just 100% Organic Cotton a sustainability accomplishment….?
What about the chemicals used during processing of the fabrics…?
What happens of them after the intended process is done…?
Ever thought about it….

THE DYES

Others
  • It is estimated that 700,000 tons of dyestuff alone (leave alone other chemicals used in the processing) is being produced in the world.
  • Of this 200,000 tons of dyes are estimated to not taken up dyeing the process and end up as effluents
  • A heavy amount of energy and other resources including water, electricity & chemicals are used in treating these effluents.
  • And even after this a sizeable quantity of dyes end up as Sludge which then end up in landfills

What we use at Little Natura…

Plant based dye extracts from

  • Turmeric (yellow)
  • Butterfly Pea flower (blue)
  • Annatto Gold flower (Yellow)
  • Eclypta Leaf (Green)
  • Musa Burgundy Flower (purple)
  • Turmeric & Limestone (pink), etc…
  • These extracts are completely natural and bio degradable.
  • The leftover dyes are very beneficial to the environment.
  • Can be solidified and used as manure.

OTHER PROCESSING CHEMICAL

In the process of dyeing, apart from dyes, various processing chemicals are used.

Scouring Agents

Others
  • Usually LYE (Sodium Hydroxide), a strong alkali is used to strip the cotton fiber off its natural waxes and (so called…!) impurities to make it dyeable.
What we use at Little Natura…
  • Ash Water, Lactase enzyme from Yogurt / Curd is used.
  • Completely Biodegradable & non harmful to environment and skin.
  • Retains the natural properties of the processed cotton.

our baby clothing offers the perfect blend of softness and eco-consciousness for your precious bundle of joy.”

Bleaching Agents

Others
  • HypoChlorite, Hydrogen Peroxide are the general bleaching agents used to brighten cotton.
  • This improves brilliancy of dyes and improves dye take-up.
What we use at Little Natura…
  • Bleaching agents are not used in the making of Lil Natura products…

Mordants

Others
  • Mordants are chemicals that help dyes bind to the textile fibers.
  • They improve colorfastness and color brightness.
  • Commonly used Mordants include Alum, Copper Sulfate, Iron salts, and Chrome.
What we use at Little Natura…
  • Mordants are not used in the making of Lil Natura products…

Acids and Bases

Others
  • Depending on the type of dye used, an Acid or a Base may be added to the dye bath to adjust the pH of the solution.
  • This helps to promote the dye uptake by the fibers.
What we use at Little Natura…
  • The dyeing process happens at Neutral pH.
  • So acids or bases are not needed in our process…
  • ( Additional Benefit – This retains the natural properties of cotton…!)

Surfactants

Others
  • Surfactants are used to aid the penetration of dyes into fibers.
  • They help to break down surface tension and improve wetting.
What we use at Little Natura…
  • Soap nut extract (Sapindus Trifoliatus ) is used as surfactant & soaping agent.

Electrolyte

Others
  • Glauber’s Salt (Sodium Sulphate Decahydrate) is often added to dye baths as electrolyte to promote the adsorption of dyes onto the fiber surface.
  • Approximately upto 500 grams of the same is used to dye one kilogram of cotton.
What we use at Little Natura…
  • Common Salt ( Sodium Chloride ) is used.
  • Only for certain colors, a maximum of 2 to 5 grams of Common Salt per kilogram of cotton is used.

Reducing agents

Others
  • Reducing agents are used to reduce certain types of dyes so that they can penetrate the fibers more easily.
  • Examples include sodium hydrosulfite and sodium dithionite.
What we use at Little Natura…
  • Reducing Agents are not used in the making of Lil Natura products…

UV Absorbers

Others
  • UV absorbers are added to dye baths to prevent fading and degradation of the dye due to exposure to UV light.
What we use at Little Natura…
  • UV absorbers are not used in the making of Lil Natura products…
